Adversity: Diagnosed with HIV, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorder

Advocacy: Helping others navigate similar compound challenges

“Just to know that I am reaching people by telling my story brings joy to my life.”

Stephen Puibello, also known as the Bipolar Bear, is recognized for his advocacy work on three topics: HIV, bipolar disorder, and substance use disorder. As a gay man living with each of these challenges and navigating his own recovery, he hopes to help others with similar compound adversities.

Stephen’s story began in 1996, when he lost his 66-year-old mother to cancer. Two months later, he learned he was HIV positive, and soon thereafter, was diagnosed with bipolar and substance use disorders. Stephen worked hard to educate himself about his challenges; and in 2004, he created a website to share his story and provide resources for those living with the co-occurrence of mental health issues and substance abuse. In 2015, he suffered a recovery setback, but through community service and commitment, he again took control of his life and grew determined to find ways to live with whatever it throws his way.

Today, 30 years after his adversity-to-advocacy journey began, Stephen is involved with numerous advocacy groups and works tirelessly to promote mental health treatment, different paths towards recovery, and the power of storytelling to reduce compound stigmas. His message now for those who are struggling is the same one that he has always offered: You are not alone.
